 DHS Counseling Department: Senior Year Planner for 2012-13

Fall:

-Take the Practice ACT/SAT on  September 8/15-see Mrs. Halket in Counseling to sign up

-Take the Catalyst SAT Bootcamp on September 29-30 to improve scores (www.catalystprep.com)

-Narrow list of colleges down to eight to ten schools-review with Counselor

-Future college athletes- register at the NCAA Clearinghouse (www.ncaa.org)

-Attend College Open House Events-see Counseling Website for calendar

-Attend Senior/Parent College Application Workshop on October 3- 6:30 pm

-Attend Tri-Valley College Fair at Granada HS on October 16- 6-8pm
 
-Attend Catalyst ACT Bootcamp on October 20-21 to improve scores (www.catalystprep.com)
 
-Register for SAT (www.collegeboard.com) and ACT (www.actstudent.organd complete all testing by November/December
 
-Attend College Application Workshops at Lunch in J104 Computer Lab on
Tuesdays from October 9 - November 27

-Set up a simple e-mail account for college information/applications only

-CSU Applications completed on-line (www.csumentor.edu) from October 1-November 30- create student account immediately at each campus

-UC Applications completed on-line (www.ucop.edu) from November 1-30

-Begin working on college essay-see your counselor and English teacher for help and writing tips packet

-Private Colleges-check deadlines on individual websites or complete one application at www.commonapp.org for over 450 U.S. Colleges

-Sign up for the ASVAB on November 14-mandatory for all Armed Services

-If applying for private schools and scholarships-complete Letter of Recommendation Packet- ask teachers/counselor two weeks before deadline

Winter:

-Continue applying for scholarships-see Career Center Website for lists

-Attend Financial Aid Night on February 6, 2013

-Turn in Cal Grant Release Form to Counseling Office by February 14

-Complete FAFSA on-line at www.fafsa.ed.gov from January 1-March 2

-Community Colleges begin accepting applications- see www.cccco.edu

-Las Positas Collegewill be visiting Civics/Economics classes-complete Early Decision Application by deadline for guaranteed classes in Fall

-Complete Assessment Testing for community college in order to register for classes

 Spring:

-check e-mail for college notices and complete all requests before the deadline

-Review and compare financial aid offers

-CSU Applicants- complete ELM/EPT Testing if needed by deadline

-Choose your college and notify your them by deadline (usually May 1)

-Send in housing deposit ASAP

-Send final transcript to confirm graduation!
