Dr. Stephen L. Hanke
Dr. Hanke has an extensive background in public education. He has both site and district experience, having served as a teacher, principal, and assistant superintendent in four school districts. His teaching and leadership experience encompasses high school, middle school and elementary school levels. Prior to coming to Dublin USD in July 2006, he has served six years as Assistant Superintendent - Human Resources in the Las Virgenes Unified School District in Southern California. Like Dublin, Las Virgenes is a high-performing school district. It serves approximately 12,000 students in grades K-12. Prior to serving in Las Virgenes, Dr. Hanke was Assistant Superintendent-Educational Services for the Pleasant Valley School District, a K-8 district. In addition, Dr. Hanke has been an adjunct professor for the California State University system for a number of years, specializing in leadership, school law, and human resources.
Dr. Hanke earned his Bachelor's and Master's Degrees from California State University - Northridge and his Doctorate from the University of La Verne. He has extensive experience in interest-based problem solving and collaborative group processing. His dissertation focused on non-adversarial approaches to collective bargaining. In addition, he is a strong proponent of the Professional Learning Community model which the district has embraced for the past three years. He has presented at a number of State conferences, including California School Boards Association, Association of California School Administrators Region XIII and Personnel Institutes, and the Tri-Counties School Personnel Association’s annual conference.
He has led his former districts in goal-setting and strategic planning, the development of collaborative problem-solving systems, and the development of a Leadership Assessment / Professional Growth system for district and site leaders. He has also served on multiple Western Association of Schools and Colleges accreditation teams and represented regional Association of California School Administrators on State-level committees.
Dr. Hanke has three grown children who are graduates of the public school system. Each of them has earned a degree from a California State University. His daughter, who is married and lives in Dublin, graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in art. His oldest son, who is married, graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in communication. His youngest son, who is married, is employed by a solar power company, and graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in business/marketing.
Dr. Hanke enjoys reading, traveling, outdoor activities, gardening and landscaping, and spending time with his three grandchildren Clay, Eli and Savannah. He continues to be impressed with the vision, leadership, and personal touch of the people who are the Dublin Unified School District. He is proud to be part of the Dublin team.
