Welcome to First Grade
Mrs. Maher's Adventures in Learning
Degrees and Certifications:
A little bit about Mrs. Maher
My educational journey started at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst where I majored in individualized learning in education. I then got a master's degree in education at the University of Massachusetts at Boston. I then entered the teaching profession as a full-time classroom teacher where I worked in the Massachusetts public school system, then later in the California public schools. After 16 years in the classroom, I took a leave of absence to move abroad with my family. During my leave, I was involved in various international schools through volunteering and observations. Along with my volunteering, I went back to school, this time I studied and received a master's degree in Brain-Based Teaching and Learning.
All children can and should be passionate about learning. I believe it is the job of both educators and parents, to help children by giving them strategies and tools that maximize strengths and passions, advancing learning for all. Using strengths and passions to help develop areas of learning that may at first seem a bit challenging. My experience in the field of education has spanned almost two decades and within that time I have been a teacher, parent, and student. I have studied psychology, science, and sociology behind learning. I have been in the classroom applying various teaching strategies and I have been the student studying the neuroscience behind learning and development. It is with this background I have developed an expertise in helping students learn.
I have taught grades K-4 with most of my 18 + years in first grade. I love first graders and their view of the world and their eagerness to learn, love and grow.
I live in Danville with my husband and twins Tabitha and Tobias along with two cats and a dog. We all love learning and outdoor adventures and traveling.
