Away for the Day

August 7, 2019

Dear Wells Middle School Students and Families,

We are in a technology revolution - something that has changed our society and made our world fast-paced, connected, and dynamic. On the same note, whether intentional or not, it can also remove us socially, intellectually, and emotionally from being present with those around us.

This year, we have made the decision to implement Away for the Day - a mobile device protocol designed to promote fully engaged learning, provide greater opportunity for face-to-face connections, and increase personal awareness. While there are many positives to mobile devices, not being focused on the present has increased social isolation, mental health problems, and safety issues. Last year, 40% of our disciplinary issues were related to the use of a mobile device and we are committed to making changes that will benefit the well-being of our students.

Away for the Day  - Mobile Device Protocol

Wells Middle School recognizes the importance of interpersonal communication and
has therefore implemented, Away for the Day, a mobile device protocol to promote fully engaged learning with our students.

Mobile phones, smart watches, and any other communication and/or music devices must be turned off prior to the start of the first bell, and must be placed away in a student’s backpack. Devices cannot be stored in clothing pockets. They may be turned back on after the last bell has rung and they have exited their class for the day. Mobile devices may not be turned on or used during breaks or lunches.

We understand that the safety and security of your child is extremely important, and you have entrusted our school with this responsibility. We encourage you to support us in this new protocol and work with your student to proactively address issues and events that require planning including pick-up, preparing lunch, appointments, and other activities in advance of school drop-off.  If you need to contact your child during the school day, you can reach our main office at (925) 828-6227 and our staff is dedicated to making sure you connect with your student as needed.

Thank you in advance for partnering with our school in order to provide a safe and productive learning environment for our students. Please contact me with your questions or concerns at (925) 828-6227 or slausonrobert@dublinusd.org.

Sincerely,

Robert Slauson, Principal
