We Are Educating Together!

"We Believe In You" window shot

August 14, 2017

Dear Dublin students, families and amazing teachers and staff,

Welcome back! We are so excited to see our students back in the classrooms ready to learn and to start the 2017-18 school year. The Board of Trustees and I toured all our schools on Monday and we are incredibly proud of the good work happening in every classroom. Thank you to our incredible staff for their hard work preparing each site for the arrival of our students today.

Our theme for this year is “Educating Together.” It simply states our promise of unwavering commitment to our students and working collaboratively to ensure their success. We are proud of the growth of outstanding program offerings at every level.  We have added more after school partnerships with DPIE, expanded our Project Lead the Way programs at our secondary schools, and we are starting a new live streaming service from Dublin High’s video production students that will provide a live glimpse into the incredible days of our Gaels!

As new students arrive each day, our facilities team and partners are hard at work ensuring that we have beautiful classrooms designed for 21st century instruction.  One major construction project completed over the summer was at Dougherty Elementary School.  On Sunday, August 13th, we celebrated the opening of the new Kindergarten Classroom Complex at Dougherty with a special ribbon-cutting ceremony. These long-awaited classroom spaces add a whole new dimension to our National Blue Ribbon School. Thank you to the Dublin community for your support with the Measure C and E bonds, which funded the new addition.

More new facilities will open in 2018. We will spend this year completing our newest school, Cottonwood Creek School, the K-8 school and city park site that will undoubtedly be a jewel in our district. We look forward to finishing the building construction, preparing the park grounds, and the selection of a principal and staff for our opening next fall.

With the growth in our school sites, we have also welcomed some new leaders to the District Office. We are pleased to announce our new Assistant Superintendent of Business Services, Joe Sorrera, as well as our Director of Elementary Education, Jessica Kiernan and our Director of Secondary Education, Alberto Solozano. They are joining a great team and we are excited to have these experienced educators supporting our school sites.

While some things are new, many important things remain constant as we start another school year.

We have remarkable, committed teachers who go above and beyond every day for our kids. We have hard-working, dedicated staff at all of our sites, and we have an involved, enthusiastic community of parents and leaders who support our students at every turn.

We value the feedback from our community and partners. Throughout the fall, we will need your input, guidance and voice as we tackle many challenging issues.  For example, as we move toward transitioning to “By-Trustee-Area” elections, we need your input at our community meetings to guide this change and inform the map drafting and selection.  There is also critical work to be done by our new Community Review Committee, who will be examining the plan for a future high school in Dublin and making recommendations to the Board of Trustees.  Finally, we are having important discussions in our Boundaries Committee as we examine the ways in which we will grow and change as a district.

Despite the challenges and opportunities we face as a community, our vision remains steady.  The DUSD staff are squarely focused on delivering the best environment for our students to succeed and thrive.  I am incredibly proud of our team and our work on behalf of our amazing students and families.  Truly by “Educating Together” our students will receive the best education possible.  Here’s to a fantastic 2017-18 school year!
