"One School, One Book" a Success at Frederiksen

November 19, 2019

Last week Frederiksen participated in 'One School, One Book.' Every classroom and all staff read 'A Bike Like Sergio's,' about a boy who does the right thing even though it's hard. The goal of the program is to bring staff and students together over a shared reading experience while at the same time promoting the use of picture books with upper-grade students and educating our parent community on the importance of reading aloud.

As part of the project, classroom discussions were held to discuss the book and its message, students picked characters in the book and had others guess which one they were based on yes/no questions. Students created videos discussing their connection to the book, one class heald a Socratic seminar, and classified staff engaged students in discussions about their favorite characters.

A special "Thank you!" goes out to Colonel Jon Ellis and Major General William F. Dean Chapter, Association of the United States Army at Camp Parks, for purchasing forty copies of this book for Frederiksen. Their generosity made it possible for every classroom and staff member to participate in this great program.
