Update on Gastroenteritis (Stomach Flu)

Subject: Re: Update on Viral Gastroenteritis

Dear JDS Families,

Our number one priority is the health and safety of our students. As you know, we have had several students report symptoms of acute gastroenteritis, also known as the stomach flu. As we approach the three-day weekend, we are asking for your continued cooperation in following the advice given to us by the Alameda County Public Health Department:

  • If your child has stomach flu-like symptoms including upset stomach, vomiting, and/or diarrhea it is important that they do not come to school for at least TWO FULL DAYS until after the symptoms have ended and your child feels better. It is also recommended that your child not attend any group events such as birthday parties, clubs or sports teams, etc. until at least 48 hours after symptoms have ended.

  • Remind your student to always wash their hands thoroughly with warm soap and water throughout the day, especially while at school, prior to eating, and after using the restroom. Do not share food, glasses, water bottles, eating utensils, lip balm, tissues or towels.

Our staff has been working diligently on performing preventative/containment measures. This includes deep cleaning and disinfecting our school to help prevent transmission of the illness with a focus on affected classrooms and common areas such as bathrooms, cafeteria, auditorium, multipurpose rooms, library, and other shared areas.

If your child is feeling well by Monday evening, and has been symptom-free for at least 48 hours, it is safe to send them to school on Tuesday. Thank you for working with us to keep our school healthy and safe.

Sincerely,

Joy Scarpinato
