TRAVEL OUTSIDE THE U.S.

Tuberculosis (TB) is a potentially serious infectious disease that primarily affects your lungs.  The bacteria that cause TB are spread from person to person through tiny droplets released into the air via coughs and sneezes.  TB was once rare in developed countries, but the number of TB cases began increasing in 1985.

According to Alameda County's TB Screening Policy, all schools within Alameda County must comply with the following:
"Testing is indicated if students travel 4 weeks or more in duration in an endemic area."

If your student is traveling to one of the areas listed below either during the school year or during Summer break and will be there for 4 weeks or more, your child will need medical clearance prior to attending school.  Please take your child to a physician and bring a note indicating that the child is free of symptoms related to TB.  Your child will need this clearance before they will be able to attend school.  In addition, the child will also need to receive a TB skin test 12 weeks after their re-entry into the USA.  Please provide the school with documentation of this when it is complete.
